Wrapping Up SF Beer Week

Events

As San Francisco’s much-loved Beer Week comes to a close today, many of the city’s residents are contentedly treating their hangovers and gearing up for one last hoorah (at least until next year). This ten-day celebration of hops and barley includes over 400 individual events and is considered by many residents an unofficial city holiday.

Our good friends and Lower Haight neighborhood bars, Toronado, Noc Noc, Molotov’s and Mad Dog in the Fog have had a helluva run. We spoke to the good people over at Mad Dog and they’re floating on a cloud. “It’s been amazing!” They exclaimed. This Foggy bar has had good reason to be excited; to celebrate this Beer Week, they’ve brought in a special array of delicious craft brews to pour on tap. These mouthwatering selections include five options from Firestone Walker Brewing Co. and at least four from Goose Island Beer Co., including their Bourbon County Brand Stout that boasts a whopping sixteen percent alcohol content. “It’s like whiskey!” the Mad Dog folks told me gleefully.

Our neighbors are going out with a barley wine celebration that you wouldn’t want to miss. Mad Dog is hosting an all-day barley wine festival, Noc Noc has put together excellent flights of barley wine (to make you barley wine level=expert in no time), and Toronado will knock your socks off with 50+ selections of craft brewed barley wines on draft.

If you’re a bit shy of the stuff, fear not! Molotov’s has got your back with their all-day ‘barley wine break.’ They’ll be featuring a broad selection of popular and rare brews from much-loved Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

This is how the week ends, this is how the week ends, not with a bang, but with a lager…

Today’s You Oughta Know…The La Pena 2nd Skin Mural Project

Art & DesignCultureFeatured

We wanna give big ups to our friends at the Trust Your Struggle Artist Collective for their most recent project with the La Peña Cultural Center across the bay in Berkeley. They’ve aimed to match money from the East Bay Community Fund for Artists and raise $17,000 in order to paint a “2nd skin” mural  over the iconic original. This new piece will be painted by the TYS collective in consultation with the original artists of the first La Peña mural, which is now past repair.

Local artists, historic landmarks, and publicly funded murals all rolled into one cause? Hell yes we’re gonna spread the word. And you should too. Check out their fundraising website, donate a couple bones, tweet all about it (oh yea we got the hashtags too….#2ndSkin, #LaPena, #TrustYourStruggle, #PublicArt, #Murals) etc. We’re always into doin good in the larger neighborhood.

Awesome SF Pop-Up Shop

CultureFeaturedOutdoors

Oh MAN, this pop-up is super sweet.

Edicola is run by the SF publishing company Colpa and sells indie books, prints, and other fantastic stuff.  They’re clearly doin big things in small spaces; the shop is housed in a former newspaper stand- definitely a cool use for the spot seeing that newspaper sales have been slipping in recent years. Carissa Potter and Luca Nino from Colpa hold down the corner of 6th and Market St. fort and will surely appreciate you stopping by. We also love that they’re still promoting printed items…many of us are familiar with some twinges of guilt for always listening to podcasts and reading the news online instead of actually reading the newspaper. Edicola says they’re “set on challenging the current state of publishing and suggesting we are far from the death of print”.

So whether you’re in the market for some technological guilt relief, a unique gift, new read, or just wanna see how they fit all that cool stuff in their mini shop, this store is worth a visit. After all, your iphone won’t chat back to you as you peruse the news and Carissa definitely will.

Keep Savile Row!

CultureStyle

On April 23rd, well-groomed Brits protested. Assembled outside the Abercrombie & Fitch flagship store in London.  These dapperly dressed individuals were  standing to affirm against Abercrombie & Fitch’s company plan to open a store on Savile Row.  Savile Row is know in London as the shopping street that has long been the home of fine British tailoring. Protesters carried signs that read “Give Three Piece A Chance.” The protest was organized by The Chap, a British gentlemen’s magazine.

Stand strong guys! Looking good!
